The overall artist commissioning strategy for Uclan Student Centre & University Square has been developed by public art consultant Ian Banks, of Atoll Collaborative. To curate and manage this, Ian is acting as sub-consultant to project architects Hawkins\Brown, whilst working  under the UCLan Masterplan team generally, and directed by Professor of Public Art Practice, Charles Quick in particular. A project public art strategy group, comprising various design team members, UCLan stakeholders and Preston city representatives are also involved in helping test and steer the overall curatorial vision.

A key enabling part to test and help realise this vision has been the early installation of #thetestbed on site, followed by the establishment of the inaugural artist-in-residency of David Boultbee from BREAD Arts within it.

The design of #thetestbed converted shipping containers and their compound were conceived and project managed on site by Ian, who is also a chartered architect. The ‘voice’ and research focus of this blog and Twitter account are both facilitated by Ian on a daily basis to both inform the evolving public art commissioning vision, and to map and augment David Boultbee’s Artist-in-Residency.
